Just a quick post detailing the installation of wget on OSX.

wget is a useful tool that can be used in the terminal for downloading files from the internet.

It should be pre-installed with most Linux distributions, but might not be installed on OSX.

Install wget

This post lists a few options for installing wget on OSX. I prefer the third option, which is reproduced here, and uses curl, which should be installed on OSX. In a terminal, enter the following:

Note: Instead of using the following manual commands, using curl, just use brew.

brew install wget

Manual method

mkdir -p ~/build/wget
cd ~/build/wget
#note: could use a later version, e.g. 19, but 15 will be easier to install
# version 19 would not create a makefile easily

curl -O http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/wget/wget-1.15.tar.gz
tar -zxvf wget-1.15.tar.gz
cd wget-1.15/
#instead of just ./configure use the following
./configure --with-ssl=openssl
make
sudo make install

It will be installed to /usr/local/bin/wget
